The Southern Hemisphere’s biggest winter party is celebrating its 35th birthday this year. From 26 June to 5 July, thousands of locals and visitors will take to Queenstown’s streets and ski slopes to welcome in the start of winter with mountain races, street parties, fireworks, live concerts, comedy, theatre, and loads of family fun, as part of the 2009 American Express Queenstown Winter Festival.
Attracting hundreds of athletes from Pacific Rim countries and beyond, the Southern Lakes will take centre stage for the inaugural Winter Games NZ 2009, the biggest snow sports event outside of the Winter Olympics.
Acting as a direct lead-up to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver next year, the event will take place at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Snow Farm, Naseby and Dunedin in August and will feature alpine skiing, free skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, curling, ice skating and adaptive snow sports.
Also look out for the Queenstown Adventure Film Festival, the Glenorchy Winter Ball, Gay Ski Week New Zealand and Coronet Peak’s Mountain Mardi Gras.
